Arizona Technical Writing Licenses

Those who are interested in working as technical writers in the state of Arizona are often curious to know if they are required to have any specific kind of license or certification in order to work in the field. After all, if you were to just ask the average person off the street about this, he or she would more than likely say that yes, a license is required. What most people think about this very misunderstood field, however, is not correct. No license is actually required to work as a technical writer in the state of Arizona. Anyone can hire absolutely anyone to be a technical writer.

It is likely that most of the confusion people have over thinking that licenses are a necessary part of working in the field is due to the fact that a lot of schools out there do offer licensure and certification programs in technical writing and related areas. It is important to understand, however, that such educational institutions are simply offering programs that could help prospective technical writers to earn jobs in the field by teaching them the skills they will most likely to have success. These programs, however, are not necessarily a pre- requisite to working in the field.

This is not to say, of course, that such programs are without value. While there is no rule that says you must complete such a program in order to get hired as a technical writer, doing so can greatly increase your chances. And in a state where the competition for technical writing jobs is incredibly intense, you will want to do anything you possibly can to put yourself ahead of the competition. So, you should strongly consider attending a certification or a licensure program or even going one step further and earning an actual degree in technical writing or a related area.

The trick, of course, is to find the right program for you and the job that you wish to have in the field. But, the only way to do this, of course, is to know what you want to do, something that can be challenging in and of itself due to the incredible diversity of technical writing jobs available. Each job will have its own very unique requirements and necessary skill sets, and it is up to you to first decide on a field of interest in technical writing, and then learn about and meet the requirements for that job. If you can and are willing to do this, then you can have success, with or without a licensure or certification program.

No matter what you end up deciding, keep in mind that there are always possibilities for work in the field. As long as you can write and write well, a skill that far too few people have, there is a place for you somewhere in the technical writing field. It is up to you, however, to find that place. Don't be afraid to get out and do some exploring.
