Become a general information technician.

The field of information technology (IT) has grown so vast and fragmented into so many professional paths that it is no longer generally discussed as a career choice in and of itself.  Information systems, security, network design, software development – all of it falls under the category of general information technology.  For that reason, a degree in IT can probably take you in a wide choice of directions.

Generally, computer and information systems managers plan and direct research and facilitate the computer-related activities of firms. Today this includes not only technical but business goals as well.  The employee with a degree in general information technology is no longer the nerd in the back room; he/she will be consulting with top management and make detailed plans for realizing corporate goals.  For that reason, people who complete an MBA program with focus on IT or some sub-section of it are highly sought after.

A grasp of general information technology could place you in the role of technology officer for a company; responsible for evaluating new technology; maximizing the use of the firm’s current technology and designing expansion of the system.  Or, an information technologist might become an information systems specialist, focused on the use and movement of data internally and on outgoing communications such as an automated help desk.

Degrees in this field include an associates’ program that is usually designed for a specific job orientation.  A bachelors degree in information technology is an excellent baseline for a resume; however depending on your new employer’s needs, you might find yourself taking a few courses in systems design or networking or information management as you work your way up the management ladder.
