What is the Pay Scale for a Computer Forensics Expert in Wyoming?

The first question Wyoming residents who are interested in possibly pursuing a career as a computer forensics expert usually want answered is what they can expect their annual salary to be. While there is no way to accurately answer this question for each individual, it is possible to look at the average salary for the state as a whole and to compare that to the salary that computer forensic experts make. When we do that, there is a large disparity that lets us know that computer forensics experts are some of the most highly paid professionals working in the state of Wyoming.

Wyoming is not known for being a wealthy state, but the average salary across the board might surprise you, because it is really quite low. Wyoming workers in general bring home an average salary of only approximately $34,200 per year, according to the United States Department of Labor. Computer forensics experts, however, bring home a startlingly different average of approximately $71,000 per year. No matter how you look at it, that is a huge difference and one that should be encouraging to those planning to pursue a career in the field.

Of course, as is the case with any state, average salaries for the profession are higher in some areas than in others. The average salary in Cody, for example, is rather low, ranging from approximately $42,000 per year to $47,000 per year. Things are a bit better up in Casper, where the average pay scale ranges from $58,000 to $65,000 annually. In Cheyenne and Laramie, the average salary is around $62,000 to $69,000, and in Yellowstone, it is approximately $63,000 to $71,000. The reason for the disparity between different locations is due to many factors. Some areas, for example, have a higher cost of living, so it stands to reason that they would pay in larger amounts. Other areas, such as Casper, tend to be overloaded with computer forensics professionals, making them not as in demand as in other cities. So, if you are hoping to bring home a salary on the higher end of the pay scale, you'll want to move to a larger area where computer forensics experts are desperately needed.

Those who tend to bring home higher salaries also tend to have higher levels of education, no matter where they live. While there are plenty of employers in Wyoming that are perfectly willing to higher those who only possess associate's degrees or even mere certifications, it's a different story when it comes to paying these individuals the big bucks. Computer forensics experts who possess at least a bachelor's degree or, even better, a master's or doctorate degree, always make more than those who have lower levels of education, regardless of their years on the job.

Another factor that has an effect on your salary is where you choose to work as a computer forensics expert. Individuals who work with law enforcement, with government agencies, or as private investigators tend to make the most money. Those who choose to teach, work in the private sector, or do freelance work tend to make on the lower range of the pay scale. So, if money is an issue to you, as it is to most everyone, you'll want to opt for a position that is known for handing out higher pay. However, make sure that you don't let money rule your decision too much. After all, you want to be happy at your job and actually be able to enjoy doing what you've worked so hard to be able to do.

Something else that can really help you is to simply continue doing the same job in the same type of environment for as long as possible. While many computer forensic experts love the flexibility of the job and use it to try lots of different positions, it's easier to qualify for promotions and/or raises in pay and to have a stronger, more marketable and profitable resume if you stick to doing just one job in the field. Following these tips and being a dedicated hard worker will ensure a salary you can be happy with.
