NETWORK ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN DEGREES

Network architecture can entail any or all of a number of business tools.  A specialist in network architecture may design a large company’s on site local area network, its global network connecting all offices; or develop the company’s Internet site and usage.  For the ongoing job role of system support a specialist in network architecture and design must understand the functionality of the software systems in use.  If the network designer remains in-house, he/she will be responsible for analyzing system problems and maximizing system operability – such as the customer interface built into the phone or Internet segments.

Network architecture today also requires development of a security system and may require consultation with a computer security expert.  A thorough knowledge of both computer and networking hardware (such as routers) and the software used to manage data is critical to the network designer’s job.

There are both associates and bachelors degrees available in network architecture.  For some data-related jobs an associate’s degree will do.  For systems design, analysis and implementation a bachelors’ degree is probably necessary.  It is still possible, however, for people with experience in the networking field to meet the requirements for specific network-related positions with the proper certification.  It will be a fit based on the nature of the job experience and the specific needs of the potential employer.

In May of 2004 the Department of Labor determined that the average salary in network design was $63,000.  Positions that incorporate management decisions will be well above that.
