How to become an Information System technician.

Management information systems (MIS) directors are responsible for their employer’s database management information exchange components, including the computing resources for the organization.  In a corporate structure they report to the chief information officer and manage a staff that maintains the system operation and handles database administration

Frequently the MIS director is also heavily involved in designing and implementing the information security system for the network.  While the primary responsibility for the job is information flow, understanding the hardware and software configurations in place is also essential.

Management information systems is a staple in the list of degree options available under the IT umbrella in most academic institutions.  Breaking into the job market for MIS directors will usually require a bachelors’ degree.  Increasingly, employers are looking for the graduate of an MBA program with a technology specialization.  This match of training and skills is due to the fact that more and more business decisions are made based on the company’s data management and data flow.

This is true not only for tech firms but increasingly for any business engaged in product manufacture or distribution.  Customer relations management (CRM) software has become a standard tool in this economy and for that reason the MIS director has oversight for the firm’s most important sales tool: its database.

MIS directors also may make hardware and software upgrade recommendations based on their experience with an organization’s technology. Helping ensure the availability, continuity, and security of data and information technology services is the primary responsibility of these workers.

The Department of Labor tells us that the median annual salary for workers in this role was about $92,000 in 2004.  People working in a consulting role on information management often can earn well above what the salaried employee makes.
