A similar but less demanding position available in many areas throughout Alaska is network technician. Generally, this job is considered a step down from the network administrator position. This makes it an excellent choice for those who aspire to the administrator position but do not yet possess the skills, education, or experience to reach it. In some areas, it may also be considered an entry-level position, which is a great way for any intelligent professional to get his or her foot in the door of the field. Technicians are generally responsible for the setting up, troubleshooting, and repairing of a network's hardware and software. This is a great position for those who like to be on the go, since technicians often travel to visit customers and work with them to help sort out networking problems.

For Alaskans who prefer to work "behind the scenes," finding an opening for a network programmer or analyst is a wonderful opportunity. However, prospective employees should know that, in Alaska, these are some of the most difficult positions to get. For this reason, interested individuals are encouraged to jump at any opportunity they get. These professionals are extremely well paid and are responsible for writing software scripts and programs that deal with network analysis. Programmers may also test and help develop third party products. Generally, this position requires a higher level of specialized education than the others that have been discussed.
